The first ATV as we know it emerged as a 3 wheeler, the Sperry Rand tricart was designed in 1967 and manufactured in 1968 however it was the Honda Atc that made 3 wheeler a house hold name and set the path for today ATV. In 1970, Honda introduced their us 90 or ATC 90 ( all terrain cycle).
Little insight on the ATV
ATV also known as a quad three Wheeler, four- track, four- wheeler, or quadricycle, as defined by the American national standard institute ( ANSI) is a vehicle that travels on low – pressure tires, with a seat that is straddled by the operator, along with handle bars for steering control. As the name implies, it is designed to handle a wider variety of terrain than most
other vehicle, although it is a street- legal vehicle in some countries, it is not street- legal within most states’ and provinces of Australia, the United States, or Canada.
by the current ANSI definition, ATV are intended for use by a single operator, although some companies have developed ATV intended for use by the operator and one passenger. In some countries, the passenger is not required to wear a helmet. These ATV are referred to as tandem ATV.
The rider sit on and operates these vehicles like a motorcycle, but the extra wheels give more stability at slower speeds. Also, dirt bikes are considered to be ATV as that they were designed for off-road use only.
although most are equipped with three or four wheels, six – wheel models exist for specialized applications. Engine sizes of ATV currently for sale in the United states’ as of 2008 products range from 49 to 1, 000cc ( 0.049 to 1.0L, 3.0 to 61 cubic).
Engine measurements and definition
Litre is an Si accepted metric system unit of volume equal to 1 cubic decimeter (dm3, ) 1,000 cubic centimeters (cm3) or 1/1,000 cubic meter. A cubic decimeter ( or liter ) occupied a volume of 10cmx 10cm and is thus equal to a thousandth of a cubic meter.
Cubic inches is a unit of measurements for volume in the imperial units and united state customary units systems. It is the volume of a cubic with each of it’s three dimensions ( length, width, and depth being one inch long.
The cubic inch and cubic foot are still used as units of volume in the United States although the common SI units of volume the liter, milliliter, and cubic meter, are also used especially in manufacturing and high technology. One cubic inch is approximately 16.387ML one cubic foot is equal exactly 1,778 cubic inches.
Are built with performance, rather than utility, in mind. To be successful at fast trail riding, an ATV must have lightweight, high power, good suspension and low center of gravity these machines can be modified for such racing disciplines
- woods racing as known as cross country
- desert racing
- hill climbing
- ice racing
- tourist trophy
- flat track
- drag racing
throughout the United States and united kingdom there are many quad racing clubs with Enduro and quad cross sections GNCC racing began around 1980 and includes hare scramble and Enduro types races. To date, events are mainly held in the eastern part of the United States.
GNCC racing featured many types of obstacles such as, hill climbing Creek and log crossing dirt roads and wooded trail

Royal Enfield Creation
19th century Royal Enfield built and sold the first powered Quadricycle in 1893. It had many bicycle components, including handle bars, the Royal Enfield resemble a modern ATV – style Quadricycle but was designed as a form of horse less carriage for road use.
cycle training and education
In 1988, the all – terrain vehicle safety institute (ASI) was formed to provide training and education for ATV rider the cost of attending the training in minimal and is free for purchasers of new machines that fall with the correct age and size guidelines. Successful completion of a safety training class in many states’, minimum requirement for minor- age
children to be granted permission to ride on state land some states’ have had to implement their own safety training programs.as the ASi program cannot include those Rider with ATV outside of the age and size guidelines
which may still fall within the states’ law industry, agriculture workers are disproportionately at risk for ATV accident most fatalities occur in white man over the age of 55.
united kingdom policies
” Quad” is recognized by UK law as a vehicle four wheels and a mass of less than 550kg 1210 lb. To drive a Quadricycle on a public road l, in the UK required B1 license as well as tax insurance and registration.
in the United kingdom, the safety issues of cars classed a quad cycle are illustrated by the case of the G- wiz (REVAI) .
The neighborhood electric vehicle was given a euro Wcap specification test and the results suffer serious or life- threatening injury in a 64kmh (40mph) crash. The UK department for transport concluded that there were serious safety. Concern when REVA was crashed at 35 mph
After consultation with stakes holders including farmers and Quadricycle manufactures Australia leads of workplace safety authorities in 2011 released a strategy intended to reduce number of deaths and serious injuries associated
with quad bike use, the development of the report was closely followed by weekly Time newspaper and ABC television which reviewed the issue through its 7.30 program. Apart from encouraging of standard safety measures as helmet wearing, the strategy also recommend development of a national training curriculum controversially are recommendation
that owners consider fitting of an after market anti crush device which may offer added protection in the event of a roll over.
when the report was released the only model of anti crush protection on the market was the Australia made Quadbar which was vigorously opposed by the industry through media activity and a poster campaign at regional events for farmers
which are often used to showcase New products, the industry argued that the device had not been property tested and that post studies of tractor style rops such as a full frame large around the operator were not only in effective but could add to the risk of injury or death.
in February 2012 the Melbourne based institute for safety, compensation and recovery research published a paper which criticized the research claim of manufactures in relation to crush protection and found that the industry opposition to roller
over protection could not be supported because of limitations in part research. It recommended further research on the topic and developed of research on the topic and the development of research tools based on type of ATV quad bikes in Australian condition.
four Wheeler ( 1985 – today) Suzuki was leader in the development of four wheeler ATV, it sold the first model the 1982 quad runner LT 125, which was a recreational machine for beginners, Suzuki sold the first four wheeled mini ATV the Lt50, from 1984 to 1987, after the l t50, Suzuki sold the first ATV with a transmission the Lt80, from 1987 to 2006
in 1985 Suzuki introduced to the industry the first high performance four wheels ATV the Suzuki Lt 250r quad racer. This machine was in production for the 1985 to 1992 model years. During it’s production run it underwent three major engineering makeover.
however, the core features were retained, these were a sophisticated long travel suspension a liquid cooled two-stroke motor and a fully manually. Five speed transmission for the 87 – 92 models. It was machine exclusively designed for racing highly skilled riders.
Honda responded a year later with the four trax, TRax, 250R a machine that has not been replicated until recently it currently remains a trophy winner and competitor to big bore ATV. Kawasaki responded with it’s Hecate 4 250. The TRX 250R was very similar to the ATC 250R it eventually replaced, and is often considered one of the greatest sport ATV’s ever built.
in 1987, Yamaha motor company introduced a different type of high – performance machine the banshee 350, which featured a twin – cylinder liquid cooled two- stroke motor from the RD 350 cc street motor cycles. Heavier and more difficult to ride in the dirt than the 250s.
The banshee became popular machine with Sand dune riders thanks to its unique power delivery, the Banshee remains popular, but 2006 is the last year it was available in the u.s ( due to EPA emissions regulations) it remained available in Canada until 2008 and in Australia until 2012. The warrior 350 was introduced in 1987 and went on for years as a light and fast ATV.
shortly after the introduction of the banshee in 1987, Suzuki released the LT 500R Quad racer, this unique quad was powered by a 500cc liquid cooled two – stroke engine with a five- speed transmission, this ATV earned the nickname”quadzilla”
with its remarkable amount of speed and size, while there are claims of 100+ MPH (160km/h) stock quadzilla it’s was officially recorded by 3 and 4 wheel action magazines as reaching a top speed of over 79 mph ( 127km/h) in a high speed shoot out in its 1988 June issue, making it the fastest production four- wheeled ATV ever produced.
Suzuki discontinued the production of the LT 500R in 1990 after just four year.
at the same time development of ATV was rapidly escalating the 1986 Honda four Trax TRX 350 4×4 ushered in the era of four- wheel drive ATV. Other manufactures quickly followed suit, and 4×4 have remained the most popular types of ATV ever since.
these machines are popular with
- workers at construction sites
Atv with a low spreader mounted models continue, today to be divided into the sport and utility markets sports models are generally small, light, two wheel drive vehicles the accelerate quickly, have a manual transmission end run at speeds up to approximately 80mph (130km/h).
utility model are generally bigger four wheel drive vehicles with a maximum speed of up to approximately 70mph ( 110km/h). They have the ability to haul small loads on attached rack or small dump beds.
they may also tow small trailers due to the different weights each was 700 which features a nearly 700cc four stroke engine.
six wheel models often have a small dump bed with an extra set of wheels at the back to increase the pay load capacity. They can be either four wheel drive ( back wheel driving only), or six wheel drive.
in 2011 Land fighter was founded, the first Dutch / European ATV brand, the largest part of production takes site in Taiwan, to European standards, the ATV are finally assembled in the Netherlands.
